Learning Greek Language

Priscilla Said:

Should I stop learning Greek and learn another language?

We Answered:

First of all, are you learning Modern Greek so you can communicate with people living in Greece and Cyprus nowadays or Biblical Greek? Because it is true that the latter (Biblical Greek) is difficult. If you're learning Modern Greek, though, I'm sure there was a reason (at least one!) for you to even consider learning it in the first place. What I suggest is that you don't quite because if you quite you'll never go back and feel really sad thinking about it. This has happened to be a couple of different times with French and Thai. According to this chart (http://www-personal.umich.edu/~wbaxter/h… made by the Defense Language Institute (Monterey, CA), modern Greek shouldn't be that hard for native speakers of English. I know of a good publisher named Papaloizos Publisher that publishes excellent learning materials for learning modern Greek -- www.Greek123.com Please keep learning Greek, it is a beautiful language I wish I spoke! :)

Trying to learn more of Greek language?

We Answered:

Apart from visiting Greece that would really help you in speaking the language fluently, I suggest visiting greek portals or newsgroups, reading Greek literature, listening to greek songs on youtube and watching greek movies and shows online.

Herman Said:

I really want to learn the Greek language, and more about Greek customs.?

We Answered:

If you are in Greece, I would strongly recommend that you do a course at the Athens Centre -- I have done 4 of their courses and they are very good. If you are not in Greece, try to get a local teacher - ask at the local church or a Greek heritage school for children. There are basic courses, if that's not too elementary for you, on LiveMocha.com, a language site where you do online courses and exercises, and can submit your excercises for correction by a native speaker. It is free for the basic services, but you will get requests to correct exercises people have done in English. There is also a good online course done by a radio station in Cyprus. Chris Said:

Is it possible to learn ancient greek language from only books?

We Answered:

You can learn the basic grammar and vocabulary from a book. You might even learn how to conjugate verbs and write sentences in ancient Greek. But take it from someone who's language is a derivative of ancient greek (aka modern greek :p): it is NOT an easy language to learn and you're definitely going to need a teacher to explain to you how spelling works and answer all your questions.

How hard is the Greek language to learn?

We Answered:

I'm Greek, so I can't really tell how hard it will be for you. I can tell you though that it has many similarities with Spanish, so if you speak Spanish it might be easier for you. A Spanish friend I have learned easily Greek.
