Learning American Sign Language Online...? Please Help!?We Answered:
This site has free lessons. No account but the lesson plans are numbered from 1 through 45 and are very detailed. No videos, uses pictures. Really great site.http://www.lifeprint.com/asl101/
It looks like you have to register with them. There is a grammar section also.

I taught my infant daughter to sign by watching Signing Time videos. She signed her first signs when she was 5 months old. She is not deaf, it just made things easier than waiting for her to start talking.

And I always use this site with my daughter on my lap. We'll go through the dictionary words. It's really great.

Also, try you local library for videos and books

Is learning sign language as a course online difficult? We Answered:
It is more difficult than other things you could choose to learn online, but it's certainly not impossible. Do you use a webcam, because that would help.Susan Said:
Where can i learn sign language online? We Answered:
What you seem to be looking for is a dictionary.http://www.Signingsavvy.com (my favorite)
http://www.aslpro.com (a lot of the signs are different from what I use but are still correct however. it's still an awesome reference)
You will however NOT be using ASL (American Sign Language) or any other type of sign language for that matter. You will be using a signing system some form of MCE (manually coded English). In your case it would most likely be SEE (signed exact english) This basically uses ASL signs and puts them in English word order. For example if a song said "no more" I am 100% sure that you would look up the sign for NO and the sign for MORE and put them together. This would make no sense in ASL (at least not in this context) and you would actually be looking for the sign NONE or something similar to represent this English phrase.
ASL is NOT English! It is its own language with its own grammar and vocabulary. For example the sign name RUN is given to the sign that represent the action of running (sprinting) this is done to help English learners. However, one should not use this sign for the phrase, my nose is running, or I am running for office. Since your nose is not sprinting nor are you running to get an office, you are competing to win a position. To want to do a song in ASL, BSL, AUSLAN, etc. without any prior knowledge of the language is a big task, It's as if I wanted to interpret a song in Spanish without any previous knowledge (translators suck, they translate literally and like I said every language has it's own syntax, that just means they have their own way to to order words into sentences, although many monolinguals are unaware of this fact.)
A lot of the songs you see signed on youtube are not ASL and are done in a very incorrect manner.
However if you are just doing this for fun go ahead and enjoy yourself. I am not trying to be rude but just want to let you know the differences between an actual signed language and a system of codes. Many people do not understand ASL and underestimate its complexity and status as an actual language. Either way, i'm sure you'll have fun and maybe even get interested in learning to sign!
If you ever do get interested in learning asl check out these two awesome sites (they teach actual ASL since many don't)
http://www.lifeprint.com (the best! though you have to really go through all of each lesson to get the most out of it)
http://www.startasl.com
Taking an actual class and practicing with natives is always the BEST way to learn however.
