Computer reading games to help child read better?

We Answered:

I PROMISE you're child would benefit from "The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind". Mild violence(mostly goblins and monsters and no blood). Def a lot of reading, but the story is AWESOME! You can prob find it for about $12us if that. Anyway, good game, lots of reading, but not too much where your child will get bored. She can choose to be female too(which is not common)so she can feel the power of being female:-)

If she gets into it, she'll forget about the reading part and get into the story( You might too...it's very easy to do) and the game is HUGE.

It came out in 2001-2002 and the graphics are left to be desired, but the environments are picturesque. If you have a newer system/PC then get "The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion", but much less reading and more violent.

Can anyone recommend any educational games for our Wii that will help our son to read?

We Answered:

Okay I'm a psych major and I actually work with kids at an elementary school.

Let me tell you one thing I've learned. Please, please, PLEASE don't get those edutainment games for your kids. They have no educational value at all for your children. It's such a critical time for your child to learn. The BEST thing you can do is to read with your child!

But I don't have time you might say. I would highly recommend you read with your son at night. You two could sit in bed taking turns reading page after page. This is the best way for children to learn how to read.

Please, please, PLEASE don't delegate your parental duties to an educational video game! It is probably one of the worst things you could do to your child. Edutainment isn't all that bad- but when it comes to critical reading skills you really shouldn't leave it to a video game. You will also bond with your child this way :)

Where to start for learning game design?

We Answered:

3D Games are about "models" and "lighting" and most are written by teams of programmers who are very specialized. You'll have the "modelling" guy or team, the "sound" guy or team, artists, artificial intelligence guys - the list can go on for a while.

The code for "Quake II" is available for download online for free, and might be a good place to start looking at examples of other people's work.

Blender is a very good "modeller" if you're looking to get some experience in that area. It lets you build 3D objects, shade them, light them, animate them, etc. It is also free.

Anim8or is a free 3D modeller and movie maker.

I was the "character movement" guy on Sierra's "Return to Krondor" and also "scripted" a couple of the chapters. I was the "Sound Driver" programmer (one of 2) on "Turok 4:Evolution," "Vexx," "Legends of Wrestling II" and "NBA JAM 2004" by Acclaim.
