Specific Learning Disability

Donna Said:

How do I find various state definitions of specific learning disability?

We Answered:

you do not need to go to a separate message board

1st of all --what state?

states do have some variety in what they call different classifications..

for example..one will still use mental retardation--while another uses cognitively impaired

to start with

google
(state's name) special education classifications
IDEA classifications

for example--this is NJ

http://www.state.nj.us/education/code/cu…

you may need to use various search terms such as eligibility categories

federal law is minimum standard--it is possible for a state to have additional programs

Beverly Said:

Is there a specific name for reading and writing learning disability?

We Answered:

could be dyslexia

the problem is that they don't test you for teh actaul diability

only fro eligibility fopr an IEP

look on

www.dys-add.com

while convergence insuffiency is a feasible theroy--the people advocating it are not the best resource--they are oftennot objective--especially when they completely discount dyslexia

Bobby Said:

I I am on SSI and my son is classified with "specific learning disability"?

We Answered:

I agree with the others that he would not be eligible with SLD.

I did want to address the matter of whether he still has a SLD or not. The district is required to reevaluate him at least once every three years. If it has been longer than this, you can ask them to reevaluate him. If it has been more than one year, you can ask them to reevaluate him regardless of whether it has been three years or not. The only two parts of the law that apply to timing are:

1) The district is required to evaluate him once every three years at minimum.

2) The district can not evaluate him for the same thing more often than once a year.

Most people don't "outgrow" a SLD. They usually just learn to work with it or work in a different way than others. They are definitely differently abled if they are able to do this. That is the purpose of the resource room for many kids.

Fred Said:

know of anyone getting ssi for child with add, adhd, ocd, odd,or specific learning disability?my child is 8.?

We Answered:

it seems strange to say ADD and ADHD--ADHD is ADD with added hyperactivity--
it may be seen as padding the application---which it makes it look like you are being dishonest

you don't say what the actual affects of teh conditions are--
is there marked impairment in her ability to do activities of daily living-eating, dressing, play skills--is she unable to go out in public much--does she need extraordinary supervision.

each of these conditions alone will not qualify for SSI most of the time--most OCD can be managed enough so there is not 'marked impairment'

speech dealy itself is not an SSI qualifier-as there are other modes of communication

ADD/ADHD RARELY qualifies-as most people function decently..

the most likely issue would be the ODD---that can potentially limit her ability to interact with society...

SLD is generally not considered fro SSI either--many people have SLD--and you don't even know it..they act 'normal' their impairment in life functions is not affected
but still it is a long shot if there isn't cogntive impairment

Discuss It!
