Theories Of Learning

Jamie Said:

Help! need a list of the most relevant contributions from learning theories to educational contexts?

We Answered:

Organizational learning contribution from educational psychology

Educational psychology has contributed to the field of learning since the mid-nineteenth century. Johann Friedrich Herbart may be thought of as the first voice of modern educational psychology. His disciples, called Herbartians, were instrumental in enhancing the field. They wrote on the subject referred to now as the schema theory and promoted five formal steps for teaching:

1. Preparation (of the mind of the student)
2. Presentation (of the material to be learned)
3. Comparison
4. Generalization
5. Application

It was this group who started the evolution of researching and studying the field of teaching. In addition to Herbart's work, we have the classic contribution by Bloom.

There is also organizational learning in departments of higher education at the site

Monica Said:

how can learning theories be applied to change the behaviors of learners?

We Answered:

The easier question is how can they not be applied.

Learning theories have been applied in a variety of ways from getting children to behave better in school or home settings, to teaching autistic children to speak and those with difficulties simple skills, to helping those with problematic behaviours.

Here is one on "concept formation." Each link gives different aspects on the subject. All aspects are from the Objectivist epistemology.

This is a strict methodology. Once you understand it, you can argue against (or for) most other theories of concept-building you run across, and in your field of psychology, you must run across them all the time.
