What Is Distance Learning

Christy Said:

How does distance learning for graduate studies work?

We Answered:

I am in the US. I am doing a distance program here. Your classwork is done via the internet. They have chat board for discussions and some programs use webcams for part of their program for lectures. Lecture can also be powerpoints. Grad school has lots of reading, papers and discussions.

Roger Said:

What is the best, most recognised and accepted Distance Learning institution in London?

We Answered:

So, then, it's not really "just for interest and stuff"... at least not if you want it to be "of use" to you "at the end." This sort of imprecision, plus your lack of providing more information so that you can really and truly get the kind of answer you seek, is kind of what tends to attract trolls. Just FYI.

At any rate, since I'm not a troll, let me see if I can at least help a little...

University of London would have to be right at the top of this list. It's one of (if not the) oldest provider of worldwide distance learning in the UK... certainly in London. And it's fully "accredited," as pretty much the entire world of countries with cultures of educational accountability understand that term.

But your asking about London, yet using the word "course" is confusing. In the UK, a "course" is a "course of study"... so, then, an entire degree. In the US, we use the term "course" to describe a single class or subject. So here you are asking about a "course" that you want to take during a Gap Year, in London...

...this makes me wonder if you expect to get an entire credential. If so, a year of full-time study at a UK college or university will garner you, at best, a certificate; or, if you already have what the UK considers a certificate, then a diploma; or if you already have what the UK considers a diploma, then, and only then, by also counting your certificate and diploma years, could you get a full degree in the one year (said one year simply becoming the third year of the degree). And in UK terms, if you mean "course" the way they mean it in the UK, then you're after either a certificate, or a diploma (if you already have a UK certificate), or a degree (if you already have a UK diploma).

And don't bother adding to the question because this isn't a chat room or forum, and we who answer don't get notified if you add somehing; and we usually never return to a question once we've asked it... so we'll likely not see anything you add. If you want to be more clear, then re-ask the question, this time giving more details.

And you asked "which companies are worth looking at"?

Companies (as opposed to actual schools) are not the sort of thing on which you want to be spending your hard-earned educational dollars (our pounds sterling, as the case may be). There are all manner of private companies which provide all kinds of educational opportunities, but most of them provide "training" more than the type of coursework that will result in an educational credential (like a certificate, diploma or degree) of any sort. They provide, for example, what's called a "vendor certifcation"... that sort of thing.

Is that all you're looking for? "Training?" A vendor cert? Of the sort that "companies" (as opposed to bona fide schools) offer? (Rhetorical questions... don't answer) If so, then I wish you had been more specific about that, too, in your question...

...because then I wouldn't have wasted my time answering.

Hope that helps.

Patrick Said:

What is the problem with distance learning?

We Answered:

What is the advantages and disadvantages of distance learning?
Advantage: learn at your own pace.
Disadvantage: Not hands on. Not ideal if you want to study nursing etc..

What are the problems that may occur when we become distance learner?
It is always helpful to meet with one on one with a professor, your peers or tutor when you cant understand the material.
What you expect the learning institution will provide when you become their distance learner student? Nothing less than what they provide their regular students.

what"Web Technology role in “Distance Learningis the final and ultimate approach to meet the learning requir?

We Answered:

Web technology has significantly changed the exchange of information, allowing anyone with access to a personal computer with on-line capability the opportunity to gather substantial materials from diverse and wide-ranging sources. Computer literacy and Internet facility are still not universal skills, though more and more individuals are becoming skilled at using computers and at accessing the Internet. By creating a digital framework in which a community of peers can evaluate and organize these efforts, we can begin to build not only an increasingly robust and complex array of learning opportunities for adult students of diverse and often entrenched learning styles, but the knowledge base by which their teachers can establish best practices, pedagogical strategies, and an in understanding of their endeavor. The Internet has had a profound impact on the ways in which many different tasks are accomplished.
