What Do You Think About Service Learning Classes?

We Answered:

I have a friend who took one her freshman year. She a is pre-social work major. She enjoyed it but she felt it was a little stressful because she had to maintain the hours for service for that class, do other volunteer projects for the clubs she was in, work, and find time to study and socialize. She also had a full courseload because she was taking honor classes. I don't think that the bulk of her stress came from the service learning class because she told me that she didn't have a lot of homework or tests or papers for that class. She did, however, have to fill out a daily journal but that wasn't a problem.

If she was answering this question I'm sure she would definitely recommend that you do it because it's a great opportunity and you will learn alot. But she will also advise you to make sure your schedule is balanced and that you don't have too many commitments.

PS: I answered your other question too. =]

What are some pros and cons of required service learning for graduation?

We Answered:

Hahah, nice. The pros are that it shows leadership, that you're willing to help people, it brings on new experiences, teaches new lessons.
The cons are that it may be time consuming and the other requirements that come along with it, like filling out forms and such, and other things like the fact that it's not laways easy to find, or that you're simply not even getting paid for it.
But honestly, service learning is a great idea. I don't think graduation should require so much of it, like my school requires 50 hours by senior year...but it's great to help out.
And remember, I'm sure you'd like if you needed help and someone was willing to volunteer their time and effort towards you!

What is the difference between service learning and volunteering?

We Answered:

Service learning is one particular form of volunteering. It is usually done in connection with something you are supposed to learn for a class, for example: environmental education, sociology, civics, child psychology, etc.

From Wikipedia -
Service-learning is a method of teaching, learning and reflecting , frequently youth service, throughout the community. As a teaching method, it falls under the philosophy of experiential education. More specifically, it integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, encourage lifelong civic engagement, and strengthen communities for the common good.

Community Service Act of 1990, which authorized the Learn and Serve America grant program, defines service-learning as:

"a method under which students or participants learn and develop through active participation in thoughtfully organized service that is conducted in and meets the needs of a community; is coordinated with an elementary school, secondary school, institution of higher education, or community service program, and with the community; and helps foster civic responsibility; and that is integrated into and enhances the academic curriculum of the students, or the educational components of the community service program in which the participants are enrolled; and provides structured time for the students or participants to reflect on the service experience."
