Start with practical applications. Demonstrate to them that often having the exact value of a function isn't all that helpful, and that sometimes it's better to just approximate.

Show them in an example graph that the tangent line on a central point is often very close to points around the central point.

Do some simple examples, again keeping it on the more practical side. Show them why it's helpful and just how easy it is. Get them to, for example, estimate the square root of 996, or something like that. Perhaps estimate a value like sine of 43 degrees. It would be even better if you could find an example used in real science where linear approximations are used.

Then just set a bunch of exercises. You know, standard fare.

(In case you couldn't tell, I'm not a teacher. Yet.)

I would suggest checking this website www.hslda.org. It has all the legal parameters for different areas. I am not in Australia so I am not familiar with your laws. Here, we have to send a letter to the superintendent and then do yearly testing or evaluations.
