I certainly can help here. As an elementary school art teacher, I have a unit in kindergarten specifically on African instruments. One, the favorite, is a djembe drum. (You can research that on the internet, but I'll give you the basic plan for creating it here.)

materials:
paper towel roll
cardboard circle (6"approx.)
cardboard cut to shape... explain later
newspaper
paper mache (I use watered down glue quite often)

process:
make a template out of cardboard that looks sort of like a fat "c"
tape together the tube and cardboard circle
tape the "c" cardboard cut out starting at the circle, slopping down
paper mache the entire piece
paint using African colors and symbols
