Business English Lesson Plan

Casey Said:

Business as a Major, English as a minor (advice please)?

We Answered:

What university are you going to?

To me, it sounds like you really don't know what you want to go into and you're just taking any major or minor based on a small whim or idea. I would say REALLY identify your interests - if you like writing, then you should major in that, there's no point majoring in business but not really wanting to do that anyway. You might also be able to go "undecided" into college and then you can declare your major your second year or something. This is not a small decision, your whole life revolves around it and you really need to think, you can't just do business as a major because you like singing, but can't major in music because that won't make you rich, and it's your only other option because you can't major in journalism because you can't decide the branch and because you feel it's dying (which, by the way, it's not - it's just tighter and more competitive now)

Anyway, just think about it and don't rush into any decisions. Do what you like! After all, it sets the basis for the rest of your life. Good luck :)

Major in Business and minor in English-writing?

We Answered:

I don't recommend that you major in business. I majored in business and I hated it. If I could do college over again, I'd major in something that I'm passionate about like graphic design or journalism.

If you want to open your own business, a minor in business administration would be better than a major in business. Specifically, classes in entrepreneurship would be beneficial if they're available. There are tons of books you can read in the future that teach you how to open your own business, but I really think it'd be a waste of time to spend 4 years learning only about business rather than learning what you want to go into business doing. I hope that doesn't sound confusing.

Focus your energy on learning your craft, your passion, whether it's writing or music or both. If you choose to major in English, make sure you choose the appropriate English major. My friend wants to write books. He majored in English, but the majority of his classes were about literature, not composing your own work. A major in English composition or creative writing might be a good fit.

Don't neglect your passion for music too! Take some music classes as well. Maybe you could even minor in music.

Bottom line: don't pick your major based on earning potential or job availability. Money can't buy longlasting happiness. Choose your major based on your passion. I wish I had.
