Ah..the classic EMPATHY
Read the book, The Golden Rule...talks about how every religion has some aspect of the golden rule.
Role play scenarios and talk about how someone acts who is not practiciing the golden rule and someone that is - do both sides and talk about it.
Have a golden rule and have kids do 4 things that exhibit the golden rule then have them report back and share to the class.
Check out the website www.forbetterlife.org They are the ones that have those cool character education commericials. Basically in order to teach it well, kids need to have this be a topic of discussion and part of their common vocabulary more than just 1 day - it has to be something that you are willing to take on for the year and touch on it. It is such an important skill to teach and the hardest - I think the ones that seem to get it are those middle grades 2nd - 5th. The kindergarteners and middle schoolers are often at a very self centered age.
