You need to get a record player, and some clothes from that time or at least the style and learn some slang. Also learn a popular dance from that time.

Postit notes were invited in 1970's so hand out the lesson plan on postits.

Lesson Plan Idea for Comparing Cultures--Grade 2?

We Answered:

I'm going to school to teach ESL, and I work with two groups of kids. One group (my 3rd graders) are first and second generation Puerto Rican, and the other (my middle schoolers) are refugees from Burma, Cuba, and parts of Africa. Look at your classroom makeup and go from there. For the Puerto Rican kids, I would choose a country like India or Japan; something that they would have no idea about approaching and all have similar reactions to. For my mixed group, I might just choose something very close to American culture like Canada or England, because so many of the kids have been in America for a year or less and barely know American culture and the English language.

Once you've chosen, I would suggest taking a whole day as "a day in country X". Make everything you do that day related to the history and culture of that country. For example, if I was going to teach the kids about Japan, I would come in to school dressed in a kimono, and start off the day by having them take their shoes off and line them up on the side of the room like they would in a traditional Japanese home. For reading, I would do a read aloud of Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes with prefacing about WWII and war, and use the story to segue into some basic Japanese history. You can make onigiri (rice balls) for lunch with a little modification; the recipe is available all over the internet. Second graders will eat seaweed, too because it's green and gross-looking so use the nori to wrap it! You could teach them basic cultural vocabulary as well, like thank you is "arigato" but thank you for the food is "itadakimasu". Have lots of fun with this; there is so much teaching you can get out of a fun lesson like this, and the kids will never forget it!
