Description of Activity:
NIM - This is a partner activity, so first place everyone with a partner. Have them punch in the number 21 on their calculators. The two players alternate turns. During
their turn they must subtract 1, 2, or 3 from the number on the calculator. Continue until one person reaches zero or a negative number. This person is the looser.

VARIATIONS:

First to reach 21 wins.

Good Luck....

Lesson Plan for children in elementary school dealing with Dyslexia?

We Answered:

I am going to assume you mean, a lesson plan to work with students with dyslexia. But what age group? As the strategies vary a little according to age of the student.

Dyslexia affects many aspects of learning, including reading, writing, spelling, sequencing, memory, maths and so forth. No two dyslexics are the same, so the teacher or aide needs to know just how the dyslexia affects the student, to put in the appropriate supports in place.

Patience is the key, set simple achievable tasks, and build on them as the student becomes more confident, in their own ability.

I use a number of strategies to help my students, such as writing paragraphs in different colours, which helps the student keep track of where they are up to, especially if copying from the board.
Have a list of spelling rules, homophone words, frequently confused & misspeld words etc, laminate them and give the student a copy for home.
Class hand outs etc use Comic sans font, size 14, this is an easy to read font, and some letters such as the "a" is not upside down.
Try light coloured paper to print newsletters, class handouts etc on (you may have to experiment with different colours to find a colour suitable to the student)
Reading try coloured overlays, this may help reduce the glare of paper and ease of reading (again you may have to find a suitable colour for the student)
When teaching reading encourage the student to take their time, try to prevent having them read aloud in front of others, and keep in mind they may read words phonetically. A useful website is Reading with out tears.

Both my daughter and I are both dyslexic, and the above strategies I used to help her through school, then myself and my students.

If this is the sort of stuff you wan and you want some other strategies please email me, and I will be happy to give you what I use. Hopefully the links below may also be of some use too

Can dynamics and volume be used interchangeably within an elementary education lesson plan?

We Answered:

I've never thought of those two words as synonymous. You should probably think carefully about which one you mean in each instance.
