Elementary Technology Lesson Plans

Bonnie Said:

Are we holding our children back?

We Answered:

Quite frankly, I think what you is very honourable. I'm sure too sure about the schooling system in the US (I'm assuming that's where you are from since you posted it on the US version), but in the UK we still use pen, paper, and the basics in classrooms. Only specific work is done on Word, such as personal statements or coursework.

On one hand I think technology is one of the main reasons why some teenagers are much more rebellious and outgoing nowadays. If they want to do something, it takes one phone call or a message on Facebook. If they are told off, they mention it via their mobiles phones online to their friends. 10 years ago or so when this wasn't around, they would be sent into their rooms having nothing to do except think about what they had done.

On the other hand I think technology, through limited use, can have benefits, especially forming social skills. I can imagine not allowing Facebook or Twitter, but banning texts and calls at all times is unnecessary. If hey have done wrong, then I think you should confiscate their phones.

I also think extra-curricular activities is one of the best to make your child use their skills to their full potential. As well as this, you may want to think about teaching your children (or having private tuition) after they have a normal day at school.

Good luck and remember that, by the time your daughters are teenagers, there may be dozens or new gadgets that change our lives.

Am I a Loser? How pathetic do I sound?

Well at least you got to vent to someone. I wouldn't stress it too much. Yea things aren't going the greatest, but at least you're not quiting. There are a lot of people out there in your position and there are a lot of people who have it far worse. A lot of people cannot even afford to go to college or were unable to finish high school because of whatever reason. Just try to find the bright side of things and look forward to the future.
