Stella Said:

I need to teach a 20 minute lesson plan as part of my second interview, I need advice. What should I focus on?

We Answered:

Teaching

We are all aware of recent research and new teaching techniques. However, sometimes it is just the little things that make a difference in getting learning to occur. Whether you want to call them "tricks of the trade" or "ideas that have worked for me," we are just happy teachers with passion do not give up!

Keith Said:

I am in my last year of college and I would appreciate some advice?

We Answered:

I'm surprised that you haven't had a methods course for this - that said, I will give you a crash course in lesson plan writing:
The outline -

UNIT
TOPIC
METHOD
OBJECTIVES
MATERIALS
PROCEDURE
ASSESSMENT

The Unit is the overall subject: let's use geography.

Unit: Physical Geography
Topic: Mountains, Young and Old
Method: whiteboard, lecture, drawing, photos
Objectives: (only 3, no more!)
1. the student will be able to visually and verbally show the difference between an old mountain and a young mountain by outline after a short discussion of photos.
2. the student will draw and compare an old mountain and a young mountain using markers and drawing paper.
3. the student will be able to show on a world map where old mountains are and young mountains are.
Materials: photos, drawing paper, markers, world map, whiteboard and attached computer.
Procedure - I am not going to go into the details of this, but you are to write out, script in other words, every single word and movement you will make for this lesson from beginning to end. Don't leave out anything. This is very important for your first lesson and probably for your first year of teaching. You may not follow it, but it will be there as your guide, in DETAIL. I can't emphasize this part enough.
Assessment: Using your objectives - assess only on what you taught, nothing more. It is in this area that you will be able to tell if you gave a good lesson or not.

Assess and critique your lesson after you give it - what could you have improved? What worked?

This is a very simplified lesson, at grade 3-5 level in geography. Look up your curriculum for the school you are in. NC has great curriculum. Use that for your objectives.

I hope this helped somewhat. You have to keep at it, don't give up. You'll get it - it's just practice. Keep going...
Good luck! You'll do just fine.

How can I use a map in a lesson on the Great Depression?

We Answered:

You should use it to show how different US regions were affected and to show the migration of people as they sought work.

Discuss It!
