Selectivity Index™:
732 - 809 - 896

Rejected Members' Score Range

You are competitive thus far. The above statistics should help give you a feel for where you are compared to prior acceptances/rejections. A program called Naviance also calculates whether you are in good, fair, or bad standing with your current numbers to get into certain colleges. Try to sign up with them, however, I think your high school has to be registered with them. Best of luck.

Saxon Math?

We Answered:

Did you give him the placement test before choosing the level? Saxon has a placement test that you can download/print from their website to make sure you start at the right place.

If you need more help with the teaching part, there are D.I.V.E. CDs available (not directly from Saxon, but from most homeschool suppliers like Rainbow Resource) that help in this area. Saxon publishes "solutions manuals" for each of their books. These have all the problems completely worked out (not just the answers) and can be very helpful.

If you still don't feel that's enough, you might switch to a program like Teaching Textbooks that is self-taught. You could also look into a co-op class (many use the Saxon curriculum).

Becca and Monica - what teacher's manual? As far as I know, Saxon doesn't have teacher's manuals beyond the 3rd grade level.

What career should I chose?

We Answered:

What is your forte and what do you like the most?

I was in that situation before, except that I took fewer years in the piano, I swim and play badminton.

I took mathematics, major in Actuarial Science. There are a lot of athletes and pianists in this world. I was torn between Bachelor of Science in Music and Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics but I chose the latter. As far as I know, pianists are widespread, actuaries are near extinction.

New England Conservatory?

Good for you for planning far ahead, and for being concerned about your preparation. They MUST have a website - go there, and read. If you do not understand anything, print it out and discuss it with your teacher - they must have a degree from some music school. Good luck - but realize that there are VERY VERY few opportunities for employment for someone with a degree in piano performance.

Discuss It!
