Grade 3 Lesson Plans

Claire Said:

What are your favourite once off lesson plans?

We Answered:

One of the best things to do is to work lessons around a picture book. If you look online, you will find lots of them. Often there are writing and art activities around the book. You could invest in 8-10 good picture books and print out the various ideas.
Try publishers' websites for ideas.

Brandy Said:

I need a lesson plan for K-3 on jumping.?

We Answered:

What are the actual knowledge, skills and attitudes that you expect your students to acquire through this unit? I suggest that you try to incorporate jumping into the different classes that you teach normally. You could try having a "Jumping Day" where in Language Arts the students read one of the books below and in math class they measure the distance that they can jump. In gym class they can jump rope and play hopscotch. If you've got time for a quick science lesson you can talk about frogs and kangaroos (assuming that fits with the curriculum at your grade level).

Darren Said:

How do you teach grade 2's 3's and 4's about disabilities?

We Answered:

One great way to learn is by having hands on experience with the concept to be learned. You want to teach these young children about different disabilities. Good ! I say, LET THEM FEEL THE DISABILITY.
For blindness (visually impaired all the way to blind), show a movie or DVD and change the focus to one that is very unclean to indicate what a visually impaired child sees. Place blind folds on children and have them get in line for the lunchroom, bathroom or find their seats, get out their math books. Deafness ( from a loss of hearing at certain decibels
to profoundly deaf), have a child stand facing the class, with his back to you while you speak softly to the class. Turn the volume down on the TV and ask the students to tell what is being said. Wheelchair bound. Bind the legs of students and require them to walk, run skip etc. Down Syndrome is getting into the disorder of chromosomes and genes, which maybe a little hard to explain to this group. Try explaining That children are born with differences, because of what they inherit from their parents in the form of genes and chromosomes, that cause them to be blond, have green eyes, thick lips, be short or tall. This just makes them have different traits, but they can still do many things that other children can or can not do.
with the Downs children, they inherited one extra pair of chromosomes and that causes the different look ( slant eyes, curved little finger, short stocky figure, speech differences etc.) Teach that these children may need more practice and a different way to learn things, but they can learn. They want friends just like all children and they need to be included in the parties and games at school. They want to have friends. Good luck!
