There are a lot of possible reasons. It could be just a coincidence that your crappy teachers happened to be coaches.

But I think a more reasonable one would be that their primary passion is coaching and not teaching. They love coaching, and the only way they can do that is if they are an on staff teacher. My guess would be if they could coach the same number of hours instead of teaching they would jump at the chance. I'm guessing you would hardly recognize that "lazy teacher" from the one working the sidelines during Friday's football game.

Imagine if your passion was cooking and you were working in the kitchen as a chef at a fancy restaurant. But for the last two hours of the day you had to clean the dishes. You may not hate cleaning the dishes, but it's not your passion. Who knows, you may even be a talented dish cleaner. More likely, you do it simply because it allows you to come back the next day and do what you love- cooking. I think for some coaches, cooking and dish washing are a similar analogy to coaching and teaching. Teaching is simply a means by which they can do what they truly enjoy, which is coaching.
