Immigration Lesson Plans

Wallace Said:

Does anyone know a good German Immigration novel/autobiography?

We Answered:

The Lost German Slave Girl by John Baily deals partly with German immigration before the Civil War and the decision a lot of European immigrants made to bind themselves as indentured servants.
Voyage to North America, 1844-45: Prince Carl of Solms's Texas Diary of People, Places, and Events
Wernher von Braun must has dozens of biographies.

Perry Said:

How do people feel about this and illegals?Missionaries for Compassion works against 'tide of anti-immigrant s?

We Answered:

This sounds almost Catholic to me.

Created in the image of the one God and equally endowed with rational souls, all men have the same nature and the same origin. Redeemed by the sacrifice of Christ, all are called to participate in the same divine beatitude: all therefore enjoy an equal dignity.

The Catholic Church supports human rights and humane immigration law, not crime.

However citizens are obliged in conscience not to follow the directives of civil authorities when they are contrary to the demands of the moral order, to the fundamental rights of persons or the teachings of the Gospel.

We must obey God rather than men. (Acts 5:29)

You shall not oppress an alien; you well know how it feels to be an alien, since you were once aliens yourselves in the land of Egypt. (Exodus 23:9)

The émigré Holy Family of Nazareth, fleeing into Egypt, is the archetype of every refugee family. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, living in exile in Egypt to escape the fury of an evil king, are, for all times and all places, the models and protectors of every migrant, alien and refugee of whatever kind who, whether compelled by fear of persecution or by want, is forced to leave his native land, his beloved parents and relatives, his close friends, and to seek a foreign soil. (Exsul Familia, Pope Pius XII, 1952)

"Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" (The Statue of Liberty)

Jesus said, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." (Matthew 22:39)

If we truly believe and live this greatest commandment then we believe that the earth, this country, everything we have are gifts from God, which we are called to share with our less fortunate neighbors.

With love in Christ.

Penny Said:

Should Churches be aiding and betting illegals?

We Answered:

Illegal alien child molesters in the US 87,500
Mormon church charges of child molestations
Catholic church charges of child molestations
Am I the only one seeing a pattern? Illegal aliens seem to gravitate towards churches with child molestation problems!

Thomas Said:

I cannot organize please Help? (Canada, immigration, study, work)?

We Answered:

You have to ask the university if you are allowed to take the exams earlier. If you are accepted on a student visa, your husband qualifies for an open work permit for as long as you are a student. You will be allowed to work on your campus but if you want to work off campus, you need a student work permit. After you graduate, if it's at least a 2 year course, you may qualify for a post-graduate work permit for up to 3 years. Many provinces will let their graduates apply for permanent residency through a provincial nominee program after 6 months of work. Because that is provincial, you can have that application going at the same time as your old application and when one gets to stage of asking for medical, cancel the other. Or after a year of work, you would qualify for Canadian experience class but if you go with that, you would have to cancel your old application.

Loretta Said:

Are any other teachers just as worried?

We Answered:

No, I am not just as worried.

Who said that this would be easy? yes, we have to do it all and more. There are no collegiate programs, district inductions that can ever prepare a teacher for what we actually do.

Ive been teaching 18 years - and never (far before NCLB) have I had a class that was homogeneous - they dont exist. we teach individuals - and the idea that we get a leveled class is media fantasy.

What we do get is 160 (or 30 if elementary) unique individuals with varying preparation, motivations and home support. It is our job to move them *all*.

not easy at all.....but we do it, even if the public does not recognize it.

about differentiation - today will be my 5th day of instruction with my new students. My school has not even finished programing them into final classes and I have already identified the students in need of enrichment and intervention (quick look at their files along with some diagnostics) We are the ones who have direct access to our kids - and no one knows their needs better than their classroom teachers.
