Kindergarten Lesson Plans

Samantha Said:

Re: Lesson Plans for Kindergarten, how much time does it take to prepare? Daily? Weekly?

We Answered:

I would imagine that the actual concept/lesson to be taught isn't the difficult part of planning. It's probably the execution that takes time to plan. I subbed for a kindergarten class once and quickly realized I NEVER wanted to teach children that young. There's simply too many of them, and they're too needy. :) I teach 3rd grade. It usually takes me an hour or so on Sundays to map out the week's lessons, but I tweak the lessons throughout the week as I see fit. If I'm doing a more hands-on project, it takes more time to plan. Kindergarten is mostly hands on. I bet your friend really does have a lot of time-consuming work as a kinder teacher.

What are some examples of child-initiated activites or lesson plans? (For kindergarteners)?

We Answered:

Read the books and then watch for interest, the children will tell you what they want to learn about, that is child initiated, expand on what they show interest in.
The Sneeches, maybe they want to learn compassion or how we are all valid, the value of sharing or not being a bully, how not to be bullied.
The Lorax, perhaps a child or 2 will identify w/ not hurting our earth, great for teaching green living.
What Was I Scared Of, lessons on how to cope, what makes us strong, courage.
The Cat in The Hat, lessons on lies and truth and fun.
Let the kids lead the way, that is child initiated.

How can I get shy children to participate in my lesson plans? (particularly kindergarten to 2 grade level)?

THE WORST THING YOU CAN DO is call them out in front of class..

not in like a mean way but i guarantee you they are sitting there freaking out that you are gonna call on them..
do something in partners and make them pair up

or talk to them offf to the side but please dont force them to participate

Can someone help me make preschool and kindergarten music lesson plans?

We Answered:

It may not be the best answer, as I've never taught children before, however I have experience from looking after younger siblings and babysitting.

You HAVE to get the children involved. Children become bored easily if they aren't involved enough, so try to get every child involved.
You could aim for the children to make a song. Talk with the step by step to what makes a good song, and see if they can make a song using either things found around the classroom or actual instruments.
I don't think it's best introducing kindergarten students to notes and such, but try to get them understanding rhythm by doing a simple 'beat exercise'. Play a song and clap to the beat, then point out a group of children and see if they can carry the beat on.
If you are really looking for something engaging and creative, try getting the children to make their own instruments. It can be hectic, but it's great fun for young children. You can make instruments like drums and shakers easily.
Another fun game is finding everyday objects that can be used to make music, such as a pot of pencils or pans. Children seem to have great fun making music with the most common things!

I hope I helped in some way, and I hope your lessons go well!

ATTENTION Kindergarten Teachers What kindergarten Teacher Manual do you use for lesson plans and as a guide?

We Answered:

I don't know much about Kindergarten curriculum, but I would certainly think that your local school district would have a scope and sequence/curriculum guide available for you to consult for your home schooling use. You might ask your local home school group if someone has what you need, too.

You might also check with your state education agency, because even home schooled students must meet certain curricular requirements each year in order to be promoted to the next grade, etc. A phone call to that agency should also get you the information you need. You might also look at their website. I know Texas has quite an extensive curriculum guide, and since it is a public agency, anyone can access it.

Good luck!
