Sam Said:

Could you please review my resume?

We Answered:

You are trying to cover too much ground. It's great that you have a variety of experiences to share, but you need to focus on what your prospective employer cares about.

What type of job do you want? What are the 10 or 15 (maximum) things that you have done in the past that would apply to the job you want. Lead with those as "Relevant Experience", and put specific job roles and tenures in a short section called "Positions Held."

This will help you trim the size, too: although 1-page resumes are no longer a requirement, this resume doesn't need to cover so much paper. If you absolutely can't let go, put a one-sentence summary of each job under the position listing.

Education and Certifications can be combined.

With only one skill listed, I'd find a way to work your French into either education, the top list or your cover letter. Alternatively, rip out some of the tasks from your current job list and make them skills: this is for web searches and auto-text recognition HR systems that look for specific keywords like "instructional design," "computer-based training," and so forth.

Tina Said:

Is it true that college professors really don't work for a living? What about CEOs, radio demagogues, etc.?

We Answered:

Life in academia bears precious little in common with the real world. Even the newest graduates have to be retrained upon getting a job. All of them. Without exception.

There simply is no comparing life in ivory towers with life in the business world. While I won't deny that the longer a person is a CEO the less in touch with the rank and file they become, but they do work (not on the factory floors to be sure - but since that's not what their job is so what). And they work tremendously long hours. They're responsible for their organization. To the employees. To the stock holders and a myriad of stake holders. And it is on them to build the team and form the plans that will keep their organization not only solvent but profitable so that everyone within it benefits. They often have academic credentials as impressive as the most tenured professor. They simply chose to use their skills in the real world.

Who is a professor responsible to? Especially a tenured professor. And tenure is another concept unheard of in the real world.

So do professors really work? While I'll admit some do, and probably work very hard, these are the exception to the rule. The reality is that they have no real responsibility for their actions and can (and do) pawn their work load off on others (usually grad students and other TA's).

Adam Said:

Can anyone answer this? Please.?

We Answered:

This is at least an hours worth of work. You should try to do this yourself!

At the least, I'd suggesting breaking this into 10 different questions on Yahoo Answers.

Good luck getting somebody to do your entire homework assignment for you!

Betty Said:

In the interest of teaching, should I pursue a master's in Pure Mathematics or Urban Education?

We Answered:

If you don't have your teacher certification, you should definitely do the degree in urban ed (and make sure you get certified!). With that kind of program, I expect you'd get lots of opportunities to practice putting your teaching skills to use, and that will help you a lot when you have your own classroom.

The only situation for which I'd recommend doing the Math degree is if you did your undergrad in education, you already have certification, AND you've already had some experience working with urban students.
