Where can I get English riding lesson plans?

We Answered:

well, there are books on riding so check your bookstore. I think to really learn you will need a horse and a teacher to show you the right way.

Edna Said:

Trying to come up with fun, exciting lesson plans for 9th grade English - any ideas??

We Answered:

First of all DON'T TEACH ROMEO AND JULIET next year. Try The Taming of the Shrew - kids are inundated with Shakespeare's tragedies and aren't even aware of comedies!
But - end the year with poetry - they can even go outside to be inspired to write
haikus are fun and easy as are limericks (especially if you use YOURSELF as the first line "There was an old had named Ms. Brock . . .")
Nature poems are good
Traditional British ballads are fun and easy to teach, AND they can find ballads in the music they listen to as an assignment or extra credit (bring in the lyrics or the CD and discuss how they're ballads)

English conversation lesson plans, any idea? links ?

We Answered:

I don't know if this is exactly what you are looking for, but this is what I learned from, Kate Kinsella, who I think is an educational goddess. I teach ESL so the example below is super simple. If you have more advanced students you can use this basic framework to create something more complex, or with much harder vocabulary.

Pick the topic for a class discussion, like How to be a good student. Then have students list 3 ideas of what a good student does. Then after students have completed this step, give them a sentence starter: If someone wants to be a successful student, he or she should ____________. Have students pick their favorite idea and put it into the sentence starter. Walk around and make sure they phrase their answer correctly to fit it into the sentence.

Next have them read their answers to a pre-designated partner in order to practice saying the words.

Pick two or three students to share with the whole class. Then ask for volunteers. Make the students read the sentence starter from the beginning. This strategy can be used into incorporate new vocabulary, to get students talking, or even as a pre-reading or post-reading discussion.
