Lesson Plans For 1st Grade

Tyrone Said:

1st grade science/art lesson?

We Answered:

Let's take hands...
With kids seated around you, maybe on the sitting rug or whatever it is in your classroom where kids can sit on the floor and be comfortable. Ask what hands are for --- make this a short discussion unless you have rapt attention here, but first graders have the attention span of a gnat. YOu'll get numerous answers on this one. Acknowledge each one. "yes, our hands can make a peanut butter sandwich" etc. AFter the discussion tell the students that today you will use art materials (crayons, markers) to trace their hands - both of them. Do a demonstration. They have to SEE what you mean. Both hands on paper. ONe will be easier than the other. They may need help. Then have students draw what their hands are doing - are they writing, are they pressing buttons, are they holding a book? Let students draw what they wish, encourage coloring in and making lots of things on their paper. Don't just settle for two hands and a skinny line that is a pencil in the hand. Have them draw backgrounds as well.
You have introduced the use of hands as functional part of the body - you have discussed many ways how the hands can be used -
you have demonstrated how to make hands on a paper by tracing
you have encouraged creativity by having students add what they wanted and doing more on the paper itself.

Keep it simple. When you do this lesson with the peers (and there's always one who will give you a hard time) just go with it. Make them do the drawing as well.
For more advanced: have students cut out hand shapes and make lots of them. Glue them together to make a 3D sculpture.

As an art teacher I have a difficult time with the hands thing in art - but in this instance I think it works for the science/art integration.
Good luck! (make sure you have done this lesson yourself before presenting it - trace your hands, see the problems - )

Most of the curriculum is based on California Teaching Standards as well as the school district. Formulating a lesson plan you will learn about in all your teaching classes. Good Luck!

Lesson Plan ideas for 1st grade math?

We Answered:

good idea to focus on recycling! maybe have each theoretical child bring 5 recycleable items to class. it will be simple for them to see that the single items = 5. then you can have each student put their 5 items in a group or in a line maybe on a big table or on the floor, and have each student set their group of 5 items next to the other students groups of recycleables but spaced apart. then they can count by 5! not only that but they will also see how fast things would add up in a landfill, and they can feel good about recycling things that came from home that might have been tossed in the trash! good luck!

Shirley Said:

How do you teach a lesson on subject verb agreement to a 1st grade class?

We Answered:

First graders aren't famous for having long attention spans. Break the information down to one or two examples and teach around them.

For instance, when do we use he/she or they. Use direct teaching, explain interactively. Maybe quickly review singular and plural concepts in simple terms. Show a picture of a boy (or girl) and ask how many people are in the picture, one of course very good, show a picture of more than one and ask how many people are in the picture, two (or whatever it is) yes very good.

Could use animals or objects in the first part, just make sure they know you use it is and not he or she is.

Now you have a basis for explaining that when we are talking about one person, we use the word he or she is, have the students repeat this back, in concert: When we are talking about one person we use the word he or she. Have them repeat two or three times. Now, when we talk about more than one person we use the words they are, repeat the choral process several times.

Now have them play a game, you put up pictures of people, when they see one person they are to say (in concert) he or she is! If you show a picture of more than one person, they are to say: they are! Do several rounds of this then have them play one more game.

Split the class into groups of 4 or 5 depending on class size and time constraints. Give each student a picture (with one or two or more people) they are to run (or walk fast) up to the board, tape their picture up (probably want to put tape on the back ahead of time) and write a sentence that fits the picture. Like He is eating ice cream. or they are fishing. First team finished gets to line up first for lunch.

Final assessment, write a sentence on a piece of paper and have students illustrate the sentence, with the appropriate number of people involved.

Extension: work with when you put an s on the end of a verb, he swims very well, they swim very well. Keep to simple verbs they will know and don't overwhelm them by trying to teach every verb all at once. Extend this by practicing for 2 or 3 minutes a day with different verbs, maybe part of the day's warm up until the teacher is satisfied the students have the basic concept.
