Lesson Plans For Elementary School

Joanne Said:

Help please! I need to do a lesson plan about Los Angeles CA for any grade in elementary school please help me

We Answered:

I don't mean to be nasty, honey, but if you're looking for a lesson plan, that implies to me that you're planning on being a teacher. I would be the last to tell you not to get ideas from other people - some of my best ideas were stolen from others - but you have to learn to write and develop lesson plans on your own. Otherwise you'll be eaten alive by your own students within the first week of school.

Here's what you do - spend a couple of hours researching Los Angeles. The web will do, although I'd recommend you hit a library. In the course of that time, you'll find things you didn't know, things you find interesting. Once you have a few facts, look for a way to connect them. Chronology, geography, culture, people - any or all of those. Weave them together, and build your lesson plan around that. Activities? Nothing could be simpler. If your kids are old enough, set them to doing the same kind of research you did. If they're younger - or if you're just artistically inclined - have them build a map of LA with points of interest on it. Have them build a model of something they would like to visit in LA. Have them write a story from the point of view of someone who lived in LA - now, or in the studio era, or when the studios were being built, or whenever takes your or their fancies. Let your mind roam. Above all, though, whatever you do, make sure it bears your hallmark. Make it yours. Emphasize the things you think are important, and help the kids to figure out what's important to them.

Lastly - don't worry about doing it "right". There are wrong ways to develop lesson plans, but I assume you've learned about a good many of those. Trust me, you'll find more. You're just beginning, for Heavens' sake. You're going to make lots of mistakes - and that's ok. ALL of us started that way. Admit your mistakes, learn from them, and let your kids learn from them.

For elementary school, how could a teacher make up a lesson plan that involves presentation software.?

We Answered:

I think you're asking for ideas on using presentation software in the classroom.

The most obvious way is to set up your lesson as a slide show. This is great because your lesson will be well-prepared and organized, and you won't be wasting time writing things on the board. Start by making an outline of what you want to include. Keep it basic, just use single words and short phrases. Avoid using full sentences and paragraphs - you will elaborate on everything when you speak. The visuals will just help students remember and realize what's important.

You can also create games and activities with presentation software. For example, set up some multiple-choice questions, and create "animations" so that the correct answer is highlighted when you click. You might also be able to do things like matching activities, and have students come up and drag a text box to the appropriate column.
