My wife just got a new job as a classroom computer teacher for grades pre-k to 5th grade.?

We Answered:

There is lots of software for different levels. I have seen some that just do colors and shapes reinforcement, some do drawing, and some even do reading and story writing.

If you really want to do something different I would try to do logo with the younger kids. It is a computer language specifically designed for kids. After that, Visual Basic, C, HTML and Java. You could throw in FORTRAN and PASCAL if you want to do more math.

it is amazing how much learning goes on in the form of play, which also keeps a child's attention and inspires better cognitive development.

your son is lucky to have a mom who is paying attention...good luck with what you decide

Pre-kindergarden Creative lessons (Child devolpment.) PLEASE ANSWER!!?

We Answered:

I'm not sure if this is too complex, but for children's dance classes, I taught kids the difference between Symmetrical and Asymmetrical by first explaining to them symmetrical is the same on both sides, and asymmetrical is different sides.

Students were then led through a few symmetrical and asymmetrical body poses.

Then they were given a simple "quiz" where I would do one and they would say symmetrical or asymmetrical.

Then you play music and students can "dance" around... and when you stop the music, call out symmetrical or asymmetrical and students need to pose.

You can then transfer this lesson to shapes like triangle, circle, rectangle, etc.

Repost: Home schooling parents: what is your idea of a good week of lesson for a Pre-K child?

We Answered:

Four is really too young to start any formal lesson plan. Did you know that kindergarten is not even a required grade in most states. Continue doing what ever it is you're doing now. You can easily teach beginning reading, writing and math concepts without workbooks or formal lessons.

Read, read, read. Read real books like The Chronicles of Narnia, Jungle Book, Charlotte's Web and Just So Stories, not watered down children's books. Get them on tape so your son can listen whenever he wants. Point out letter names and sounds as you read. Be a good example and make sure your son see's you reading!

Work on math in everyday life. Let him set the table and ask "There are five people in our family. How many plates do we need?" "There are two forks on the table, how many more do we need?" At the grocery store, "I have three apples in the bag. If I put one more in the bag there will be four." Play games like Uno and Go Fish. Young children love to show you how they can sort things so make a game of it. Sort blocks into groups by color or size. Sort beans into patterns (white, black, white, black...)

If you choose to do any formal lessons, limit the time to no more than 30 minutes a day.

Does anyone have any great resources listing everything a child needs to know pre-k-12?

We Answered:

Try the "typical course of study" lists on http://www.worldbook.com (the encyclopedia company's website). They have lists for every grade level and should be just what you want.
