I would think a solid government lesson on the three primary branches would be a good start. Introduce the three branches, what they do, how they are supposed to interact, and have the kids do some kind of work sheet on the tasks.

You could also do a word search for previous presidents as well as the primary political parties.

And if you do a word-bank crossword puzzle, you could introduce them to the key staff positions of the Presidential office.

I think your elaboration and your rationale could go together. Have students create a "story problem" using their two digit numbers. ie I had 25 pencils and the secretary brought me 25 more. Now I have 50 pencils. Students need to knwo how to add these because as we get older, we rarely need ot add single digits any more. Money, groups of people, quanities of prepackaged food, school supplies - these are just a few samples of double digit numbers we deal with frequently.
