Where can I find free lesson plans and homeschooling curriculum for my first grader?

We Answered:

Try the public library! We found lots of homeschooling resources at ours and eventually bought copies of some that we liked and used a lot. "Making the Grade: Everything Your 1st Grader Needs to Know" is a general curriculum that we found at our library, with ideas for lessons in all the basic subject areas. There are others there, too.

Also, we found that it is easy to teach many subjects (especially reading, science, and social studies) using the vast array of books and videos in the children's section of our public library. (And if your library doesn't have what you need, most will be able to borrow it from another library using interlibrary loan). Librarians may also be able to help get you in touch with other homeschoolers (who may have old curriculum to sell or give away).

Some public schools will give away books that they don't want anymore. We got old math books this way; for first grade they are in a workbook format and were several years old, but math doesn't really change, does it? So we got math curriculum for free this way. Also try thrift stores and garage sales for low cost materials.

Online, we found www.worldbook.com to be a great resource. Under parent resources they have a "typical course of study" section that gives lists for each grade of the sorts of things usually taught at that level. The lists can give you ideas on where to start for doing it yourself.

And discount stores like Walmart, as well as bookstores, often have inexpensive comprehensive workbooks that can do well for a first grader.

I would recommend getting curriculum for math and phonics, if she's not an excellent reader yet. Otherwise, you can give her a great education using library materials along with ideas from worldbook.com And if you want a comprehensive workbook for insurance (if she likes workbooks), you'll be all set....

Good luck....

what is the best place for find free lesson plans?

We Answered:

Information about free lesson plans, as requested, may be found below.

Very often using a lesson plan that is not your own has distinct disadvantages. My own view is that you may "borrow" ideas and/or techniques but rewriting the free lesson plan is advisable since it will be in your own style./
