Preschool Music Lesson Plans

Kathleen Said:

Any ideas for a preschool lesson plan for 5 year olds?!?!?!?

We Answered:

A listening activity could be give each a blank piece of paper and color crayons. Tell them to listen to your directions and draw what you tell them. Then tell them to draw a yellow circle in the center. Then put a blue square inside the yellow circle. Draw a pink triangle to the left of the circle. Etc. You could incorporate music by playing music while they draw and stopping it when you are giving another direction. You could add some letters in there too. Draw a Red A (for apple).

Music: Make large, basic shapes (square, circle, rectangle, triangle) and mount them on full size pieces of construction paper. Play music as the children walk around on the shapes. When the music stops, give a simple action direction, such as Everyone who is standing on a circle, jump up and down three times! Help the children figure out what shape they are standing on. You could do the same thing with numbers or letters.

Learning activity: Make a 'memory game' style activity with cards for the children to turn over and match. Play the game with a small group, talking as you play and asking the children What shape/letter/number did you get? Never say, No, that's wrong. Ask the other children in the group, Is it a 5? What do you think? And let them help each other figure out what it is.

You can talk about listening for the music to stop, listening to our friends when they are talking, listening to the teacher, etc.

You can also make cups with small items in them such as buttons, dried beans, small bells, rice, sand, etc. Cover the cups with waxed paper secured by a rubber band and shake them one at a time. Ask the children to listen to the sound it makes and try to guess what is in the cup. Be sure you talk about what part of our body we use to hear.
