I cannot tell you what you should know before starting your PGCE.

However, for what is worth, I would advise you not to study at the University of East London. If you still have time to research and accept a place from another institution, do so.

I have studied at UEL. Teaching standards are exceptionally poor. Lecturers are poorly prepared and often insufficiently knowledgeable. They also display unprofessional behaviour such as swearing during lectures.

As for the admin side: don't even go there. It's a joke. Just trying to get through to someone in an office is a major achievement, never mind asking them to clarify something for you. They really do not know what they are doing.

The Dockland campus is a little bit better than the Stratford campus, which is a real dump.

Finally, when you get your qualification, employers will know that you have obtained it from a really poor academic institution.

Always start with the curriculum framework strands/standard that you will cover. Then list your objective for the lesson.
Write the tasks that will be performed by the students in class and lastly the homework that you will give. That is how I do it.

Historical Thinking is thinking like the people thought at the time. Not everyone was 21st Cent. American.

The best example is that of slavery. Why were slaves useful. What benefits were there of slavery.

Why did people want to come to the US? How did the Americans feel about these new and strange people. Why did they feel this way.

The modern obsession in lesson planning is that they should have three parts and that the aims of the lesson should be shared with the students.

Call me old fashioned but I also think it is important that even ICT teachers should know the difference between "their" and "there".
