1. Horse Care : teach them about feeding and nutrition, wraps and bandages, treating minor health problems (small cuts, sore muscles etc) If a horse goes off you could teach them how to spot lameness (It's amazing how many people can't tell if a horse is lame or not)

2. Ground work and lunging: Pretty straight forward, teach them how to lead well and safely, do ground excercises and patterns. Teach them to lunge.

This is probably under riding, but teach them bareback, it's great for balance and confidence, you can start them out on the lunge.


I think it's kind of rude to say that pony club and 4H are all fat old Quarter Horses.

It's very easy to see that you've thought this out a lot. You seem to be a very mature young lady and well prepared for the responsibility of owning a pony. My suggestion is this: a) start applying for a job now. This might help show your mom that you're really serious about this. After that, b) save up enough money for all of the equipment you'll need and the first few months of boarding. It would also be wise to save some extra money for emergencies (parents love that kind of stuff ;] )

Maybe you could work out a deal with the people who own the stables you want to board at so you could work there for board, or help out every day to show your mom that you could easily get to your pony and that you are willing to go out in rain or shine (it sounds like you do this already, but again, parents love that kind of stuff).

i know i know, this isnt what you want to hear..

but you dont know that they cant afford it. You dont pay the bills, you dont know their financial situation, my daughter has no clue how much i make or anything, the bills and such. You dont understand that bills, putting a roof over your head, food in your mouth, and clothing on your back costs money, alot. Its not like it grows on trees, your parents have to work for it.

If you cant persuade them with presentations i'd just go on leasing one. If they say no, theres no point in keep trying because they've already made up their mind. I hope you are able to although, good luck. you sound like you have a nice set up.. very adult like!

Well It sounds like there is a major disconnect with you and your wife.

First Instead of looking at how much she is spending the better question might be why is she spending? Did she grow up in the lifestyle? Is she lonely? Is her spending a way of compensating for some other need? We all grow up with different beliefs on money. I know myself I was raised with the cant take it with you and any dollar I have burns a hole in my pocket. So since I am a spender...I spend but I learned to spend on things of value. I have 40 dollars I just have to blow I buy a bond, stock, gold something that will gain value in the future.

Second have you taking time to discuss your finacial goals with her and what her finaicial goals are. You should establish a budget together. Find out what she thinks are things that she needs to spend on monthly and find a budget amount you both agree on.

Third set up a seperate savings account to save in and spend as you like account. I have an account that all it contains is money I have set aside to waste be it on clothes, shoes what have you and I know when its gone its gone and I can only spend what I want from there; I have an account bills come out of another account and one for savings. It sounds like your wife's issue might be management and control, a budget on paper is a good plan but sometimes you need to take it a step further.

Fourth you cannot punish your wife for mistakes with money that just leads to a bad marriage altogether. When you married her; her money issue became yours and vice versa. The best advice I can offer is to talk to her and be honest. However you cant treat her like a child because well that will backfire.
