First things first. Focus on your flavors. Ugly food that tastes great is much better than pretty food that tastes awful.

There are more cookbooks out there that present sexy foos than you can shake a stick at. The French Laundry cookbook is a good one.

Also get a subscription to Art Culinare. www.getartc.com It is a great tool to see what's current.

Of course the best thing to do is to go out and eat. Check out the finer restaurants to see what they are doing and how they are doing it.
