If Benton is a family name, then it's great to use it. It's wonderful for a child to know he belongs to a tradition. Any name that ends in -ton is the name of a town. Thus it's a place name. Specifically Benton means "town in the bent grass." This could mean that someone in your family originated near that town and took the name years ago. Or the name entered your family to honor someone with that surname. Don't be surprised if a teacher or fellow student shortens that to "Ben" at some point. Would that bother you? It wouldn't bother me a bit. Also, no matter what you call him at home, teachers (unless warned) will call him by the first name on the roster, so that five Joshua's in the room may still happen to him. If the father (of the baby-to-be) has a strong one or three syllable middle name, you could consider that. I have no suggestions because I happen to like traditional Biblical names for at least one of the names.

What's nice about both your combinations is that the number of syllables in both is not the same in both names. You are considering 3-syllable then 2-syllable combos for a girl and for a boy. Name experts consider this a good match.

Dahlia is a Swedish name that comes from the botanist with the last name of Dahl who got to name the flower he discovered after himself. In Swedish, "dahl" means valley and its cousin word in English is dale (as in "hill and dale"). In fact, the name Dale is the male equivalent of the female Dahlia. If you have no problems with what the word comes from, then go for it! I've known one Dahlia whose family called her "Leah" because that's all of Dahlia a younger sister could pronounce (lia = leah in sound). It's nice to pick a name that has a built-in nickname, or at least I think so.

I've seen a lot of silly name combinations on this site, but you have clearly given thought and consideration to yours.

But don't worry about it. At first it will be a little weird not knowing anyone, but you'll make friends. And everyone else going to Benton Middle School won't know anyone either! Everyone will be making friends just like you. And don't worry if you don't make friends right away, a lot of people are shy, but as the year goes on, you'll find friends and friends will find you.
