Science Experiment ideas?

We Answered:

If I had a dollar for every time this question is asked ...

As references, I've listed a wealth of sites with a wealth of project ideas. I haven't checked all the links lately, so some may no longer be valid. Thanks to Former MN Science Teacher for many of them. Check out the past winners/entrants at the scisvc.org site for more difficult projects.

Be creative. Don't waste this extremely valuable experience by copying someone else's idea. Focus on what interests you. Choose the best and most interesting project that you're confident you can accomplish in the time allowed. And allow plenty of time. A really good science project looks very good to college admissions officers, especially if the fair judges agree and award you a prize. You want to show that you can think, reason, manage a project, do proper experiments, write your results clearly and accurately, and that you're willing to work. Do your own research. Do your own work. Get help and get advice. Teachers and people in industry are often very willing to give advice and to make equipment and facilities available to someone who really cares about their project. It's a great experience.

Albert Einstein was the person chosen for our project because he sparked our interest the most. We have [heard – I think you should use read instead of heard] of his importance [In – un capitalize the I] science, physics, and [some math – just use mathematics to make it a bit more formal], in all of our years in school. The information we learned about him was very brief and vague, so we wanted to learn more things about him, in depth and in detail.

[Just a note, on the second sentence you wrote that you have read about Einstein in all of your years in school but then on the third sentence you write that the information you have is vague. This may be a conflict so I suggest re writing the third sentence to make it appear to the reader that you just wanted to know more something like “His achievements in science and contribution to humanity pushed us to learn more about him and look into his life in detail”]
[From here on, I will re-write your sentences so just use your previous ones to compare]

To conduct our research we used the Internet both at home and in school. Most of the websites that we used was provided by our U.S. History Instructor. Further information was gathered from two libraries where we recorded the Primary resources. While conducting our research we learned about Albert Einstein’s personal life, which was very intriguing including; when he was born, where he was born, how old he was when he started to talk, how many wives he had, how he conducted his experiments and how interested he was as a child about how things worked.

After conducting our research, our final task to complete the project was to make a tri-fold board. We used color, and pictures that actually had significance to Albert Einstein’s life. We used different colors such as pink, and lime green to convey a message of his outgoing personality. The pictures were put on the board to show more of what he did in the field of physics; chemistry and mathematics, but there are also a number of pictures on the board that also showed more of his personal life.

Throughout Elementary, Middle School, and High School, The name of Albert Einstein has always been brought up for his contribution to Physics but after conducting in depth research about him through this project, we have learned that his contribution pushed education to a higher level, and although he might not be aware of it, he has also contributed to the other branches of science, and influenced the educator’s teaching methods, and made it easier to help people understand the little things and some finer things in life.

Chemistry... can you help me explain to a friend why I have decided to study chemistry?

We Answered:

Listen man, some people are hopeless. I also have a friend who switched careers like 7 times, she completed 2 degrees while at it but still she has no place and is working on a third one.

Personally i don't think ANYONE chooses chemistry because its their dream job or whatever, most do because they see the potential in chemistry and all the things one can do, that is if one you get lucky, two you work hard, and not necessarily but helpful if you're close to genius.

I never in my life thought i was gonna go into chemistry, until college when i was a lost sheep and also had no clue on what to do. I took chem intro, and first and second year and still didn't think that was it, but then i took an environmental chemistry course and also a geology course, and then i realized that chemistry was totally for me, and i started wondering the things that chemists have accomplished, so i decided to go for it.

With a chemistry degree you can get a job pretty much at any factory, because they all need quality and control testings, eg) soft drink plants, plastics, foundries, lumber mills, chemical making plants, water treatment plants, oil refineries, etc, etc, etc.
Of course with a chemistry degree you will get the more repetitive jobs, which is fine.

Using the chem degree to become a doctor is fine because you can land on it in case you don't make it (MBB is harder to get a job), but you will need to work harder because almost no classes will overlap with the pre-med courses, you will need to take a few MMB's plus a couple biologies.
I think only first year and organic 1,2,3 you can use toward pre-med, and of course the chem courses as electives (but good luck keeping the GPA if you'll use chem as elective).

Don't tell your friend to go into chemistry because you're into it, eventually your friend has to find her own way.

Discuss It!
