Clay Middle School

Antonio Said:

what is the process of clay? in middle school terms please ?

We Answered:

there are lots ways to "process" clay.

wheel throwing...slab of clay run on a spinning wheel where you can make bowls, cups or any round sculptures.

coils....where you take clay and roll in into long coils or snakes and wrap it around a flat base. on the inside you take a clay tool to scrape the coils smooth so it does not fall apart.

slab building ...same as coils but building with flat pieces..like a house or box with sides & bottom & top.

pinch pot....roll a large ball in the palm of your hand and pinch out from the center.

after you create your clay piece, you can attach other pieces for decoration by slip & score.
score...take a clay tool and make tiny cuts into the area of clay where you want to attach
slip....mix a "mud" of clay & water to help the new piece attach to the sculpture

firing....clay in placed into a kiln (@ 2000 degree oven built to harden the clay and bake it)

glaze....fired clay is painted with different color chemical paints bake into the clay when heated a second time.
