I read it in eighth grade, and I understood it perfectly, but it was a good book nonetheless.

Immature people could be stupid about this.
And people's parents usually get riled up about nothing. It's very likely that some parents might take offense. However, it really was a good book and maybe you can send out a newsletter to parents and if they say their child can read it, then they can read it. If they can't, they can read another book.

Or, you could have your teacher read it very quickly to approve of it or not. It's a very short book, they'd probably finish in a day or so.

*I read Touching Spirit Bear in middle school, too! I just remembered it now :)
