What's a good science experiment for a science fair?

We Answered:

since you are a "music lover", why not try to show the science of music? example - how certain vibrations in the air caused by striking some object can be interpreted as a musical note. and how different notes put together in certain ways create chords and so on and so on. example: line up several bottles and fill with water to increasing levels and demonstrate how density can change the vibration, etc.

Science Fair Project?

We Answered:

Sounds like you have managed to ignore science fair completely and it's due on Monday.

So I'll help you out and give you an easy topic that you can make up the data for....factors that affect the rate of dissolving.

You want to use sugar or sugar cubes for a solute and water for a solvent.

Things you can compare (easy)
1. Temperature
2. Surface area (cubes vs crushed)
3. Agitation (stirring)
4. Type of solvent (use soda instead of water)

Factors 1-3 depend on the Kinetic Molecular Theory. Factor 4 has to do with how much sugar is already dissolved in the solvent.

Results are going to end up with:
1. increase temp, molecules move faster, bonds break faster, solute dissolves faster
2. increased surface area, increased surfaces for solvent to react with, bonds break faster, dissolves faster
3. stirring brings more surface area of solute into contact with solvent makes it dissovle faster
4. more sugary the soda, less attraction there is between the soda and the sugar, slower dissolving rate

It's fast and it's easy to do. Makes lots of pretty graphs and charts for the board too. Good luck
