Billie Said:
teaching conversational english?We Answered:
Teach both "variety" and "parlance". Most teachers/tutors don't.The usual reply you get from students of ESL when you ask "How are you?" is "I'm fine thank you...and you?" I teach them "variety". "I'm _______." (great, fantastic, terrific, very good, couldn't be better, not bad, so-so, not so good, not too good, etc." This just an example....there are many instances where "variety" of words, phrases and sentences can be informed.
Texts usually employ "GOOD" English. Teach everyday English (parlance) to complement the words, phrases and sentences they learn.
Teach them "universal" English....both British and American.
Without it...they're only half-prepared....only half-educated.
