Do what you think is going to be good for your future. If you go to Davis, which is the far superior school, you won't be with your old friends; but you'll make new ones and you can still see your old ones during Thanksgiving/winter/spring breaks. If I were you, I would go to UC Davis. I heard about the UC admission cuts, so you should consider yourself lucky for getting into Davis while many others have not. Davis has a great engineering program, but if you decide to change your mind and switch to biology, the life science programs at Davis are excellent as well.

If you're worried about social life in Davis, it's really not that bad. New friends, prime location to nearby hotspots (Sac, SF, Tahoe), and many internship opportunities if you're interested in becoming a nurse, doctor, or pharmacist.

Best thing to do is visit campus during the busy hours and audit a class. If you don't like UCD, go ahead with UCSC. UCSC isn't that bad of a school as many people perceive it to be. I've also heard about the P/NP deal...very interesting. The choice is yours. Good luck!

wooooa! thats harsh lol! im from scotland and our school starts at 9am until 3.30pm. we have 6 periods, they all last about 40 minutes. we have break for 20 mins after 2 periods, but our lunch is only 1 hour long. we are allowed out to the toilet and to our locker and things during class:) we have sports clubs and supported study, and we get all of saturday and sunday off. I thought my school was strict haha : im just about to do my art exam(we call it a prelim) in a couple days. its 5 hours long, and we have to write an essay and design an item of clothing so i dont think you'd want to take art anyway lol...

I'd imagine your chances of getting into StanfUrd and UT Austin (assuming you're not a TX resident, which changes everything) are slim, given your GPA and test scores.

As another poster suggested, you'll likely have a tough time being admitted into the top UCs (CAL, UCLA, and UCSD). However, w/o knowing more about you, it's hard to say for sure.

I don't know the formula used but found the following when doing a search on UC admission formula (scoring above 8000 probably is good and, obviously, use at your own risk):

GPA x 1000
(New SAT + SATII + SATII) x 0.8
33-39 A-G courses is worth 250pts
40 A-G courses is worth 500pts
ELC worth 300pts
Educational Environment worth 300pts
Parental Income < $60k worth 150pts
under federal TRIO low-income cutoff worth 300pts
Parents: Some college = 150 HS or less = 300
Leadership: 150pts for 2 minor roles, 300pts for a major role (President or VP of class, editor-in-chief, eagle scout, girl scout gold award)
Special talents, achievements, awards : 150 single, 300 multiple
Comm. Server <200 is 150pts, >200 is 300
AVID, EAOP given some points
Single Parent household = 250pts
working 20hrs+ week = 250pts
Life altering event = 500pts
Less severe event = 250pts

As for your application essay, at first glance it does not sound like a good topic especially when you were not the target of the assault. However, you can make it work if you show how this experience changed you for the better. The fact that this is a recent event, makes me question how much of an impact it truly would have had and whether you have had enough time to fully reflect on it. Also, was the victim a close friend?
