Personally, I like the second one better because it would show the practical uses of math and include math throughout the movie, which is good considering it has to be about math and all.
I noticed that although the first one sounds interesting, the only math-related subject in it is the butterfly theory which doesn't even require you to talk about it in depth or explain anything very much. All you would have to say is 'the butterfly theory states blah dee blah' and then from there your movie wouldn't say anything else about math.
Then again, if you wanted to be technical, the movie has to be 'based' on math, which means the first one is completely legitimate and would result in less work for you, or atleast less math related work.
Anyway, I'll stop rambling now xD Good luck with the movie, by the way =)

I vote #2. It's a bit more original as the butterfly has already been done. It'll also be easier to make as it doesn't involve substantial scenes and a cast.
