I have issues with Algebra too, but my teacher simply made the formulas into a song with a tune that is easy to remember, like that of nursery rhymes. It did help me during my exams(and I actually passed :D). You could try :)

Great question. I would say that high school is about 3/4 required courses and 1/4 electives, so don't sweat that 1/4. Go with what interests you. No matter what you take, you'll have a supportive network.
