Math Word Problems Middle School

Math Problem? Middle School word problem?! Help!?We Answered:
First I question your equation. y = 0.1x^2 + 12 is a parabola but one that opens up. I think it might be y = -0.1x^2 + 12. This would be a parabola the meets the x axis at y = 0, so....0 = -0.1x^2 + 12
0.1x^2 = 12
x^2 = 120
x = ± 10.95
Maximum ht. would be at x = 0 and y = 12.
Now, the archway's ht. at x = 6 (6' camper) would be
y = -0.1x^2 + 12
y = -0.1(6)^2 + 12
y = -0.1(36) + 12
y = -3.6 + 12
y = 8.4
The ht. of the archway at 6' from center is 8.4' and camper is 7' so it will pass without trouble.
I hope that's all understandable and useful.

middle school math word problem?We Answered:
Here is what you know so far:-It has to be an even number, because it says twice as many of 2nd were sold than the first. You wouldn't sell half a car. :)
-It has to be divisible by 3, because 3 times as many of the 3rd were sold as the 1st.
So choice A can be cancelled out..... but after that I'm kinda stumped cuz B and C would both work, right? If the dealer sold 24 of the 3rd car, then he sold 24 of the 2nd car and 12 of the 1st. If he sold 36 of the 3rd, then he sold 16 of the 2nd car and 8 of the 1st.
Sorry, I know I'm not much of a help.... I'm curious to know what the answer is though.

2 math word problems im stuck on?We Answered:
Problem #1:Longest side = 2x - 5
Middle side = X
Shortest side = 1/2x +3
Therefore:
(2x - 5) + (x) + (1/2x+3) = 72 - 4
3.5x - 2 = 68
3.5x = 70
x = 70/3.5
x = 20
2x - 5 = 35
1/2x + 3 = 13
Problem # 2:
Oct - Mar = 5x
Apr - Sept = x
Therefore
5x + x = 600
6x = 600
x = 600/6
x = 100 (answer to b)
5x = 500 (answer to a)
C. No. Divide the miles of pipes by the number of waterline breaks.
6181 / 600 = 10.30. Which means that for every 10 miles of pipe, one break is to be expexted. The water department official overestimated the problem.

Let the triangle be ?ABCLet ?ABC be ?
? ?BCA = 4? (One angle of a triangle is 4 times as large as another)
?CAB = ?ABC + ?BCA (The third angle is equal to the sum of the other two angles)
= ? + 4?
= 5?
?CAB + ?ABC + ?BCA = 180 (angles in a triangle)
Sub in the values
5? + ? + 4? = 180
10? = 180
? = 180/10
? = 18
? ?ABC = 18
? we let ?BCA = 4?,
?BCA = 4(18)
= 72
? we let ?CAB = 5?
?CAB = 5(18)
= 90
The angles are 90°, 72° and 18°

The question wants "Where did the lightning strike, in relation to her house."
**Read to end first.
If you have a blank piece of paper and a compass? (has point on one end and pencil on other). If not a ruler would work. Mark a dot in the center of the page. Four inches up mark another dot. The one in the center is her house, and the top one is her friend. Draw a circle 3 inches around the center dot and 5 inches around the bottom of the second dot. Find the points of intersection of the two circles. One of these is the location of the lightning strike. You will find that it is either Straight East or Straight West. Since a third position which is not given is needed to triangulate the exact position based on this method, I would say the question is trying to confuse you by giving you unnecessary information.
At the very least, the correct answer would be "The lightning struck 3 miles from her house."
You might mention the information about the location being either directly east or west.
