Middle School Book List

Audrey Said:

I made a mistake--how do I fix it?

We Answered:

This reminds me:
You can please some of the people all of the time
Most of the people some of the time
But you can't please all of the people all of the time.

I personally love 'The Giver' its a wonderful book. However, personal beliefs in families can cause you grief and them as well when it comes to reading certain books.

I applaud your efforts.
As was already posted, offer 2 books to the class for independent reading. They should be approximately the same length so the reading assignments are close together.
BEFORE YOU GIVE THE OPTIONS:
Send home with each student the approved reading list of all approved books. Ask parents to look through the list and mark the ones that they do not want their child to read. Give parents at least one week to return the form. Note on the form that if it isn't returned (signed) you will assume that all the books on the list are approved by the parent/guardian.
ALSO: If you receive a signed list back where all the books are marked off, contact the parent. Chances are that the student (after the parent signed the paper) marked off all the books.

Hang in there. I again applaud your efforts.

Edna Said:

Book banning, burning, and censoring.?

We Answered:

It depends on the age of the person who will have access to the media. Would you put a book about such controversial topics in a sixth grade library where the subject could upset and traumatize the child? Would you put books in a level where the readers will likely use the material as inappropriate resources, where there will be no parent or academic guidance to understand the subject? This is clearly not a simple black and white issue. For every complex problem, there are many simple wrong answers.

Becky Said:

Does anyone know where i can find a list of banned and challenged books?

We Answered:

Here are three lists. There is of course some duplication

I'd chose
The Awakening by Kate Chopin
The Bluest Eye or Beloved by Toni Morrison
Handmaids Tale by Margaret Atwood
Choke by Chuck Palanuik
