Middle School Musicals

Tim Said:

What is a good song to sing for an a middle school musical audition?

We Answered:

I would do:

In my own little corner-Rodger and Hammerstein's Cinderella

I got the Sun in the Morning-Annie Get Your Gun

I'm Not that girl-Wicked

Popular-Wicked

Believe me.....this is how my school does it; except they ask us to sing something from the musical-maybe do something from fiddler on the roof??

Now about stage fright.....

Everyone is working as a team (remember that). If someone goofs-it's ok. Everyone is there for eachother. My guess is that your play will be thursday, friday, and saturday. Since thursday is a school night and a work day there won't be alot of people so you can work on it.

Break a leg!!!

Books on auditioning for a middle school musical?

We Answered:

I direct and music direct youth theater. For most school productions, the director is looking for these things.

1) The best actors available to cover speaking roles

2) Enthusiastic and willing-to-commit individuals to fill in the cast and crew.

If there's singing, as there will be, you need to be able to sing, of course. Sing your best. Directors of youth theater are unwilling to give singing roles to poor singers not because it will hurt the show, well maybe a little because of that!, but mainly we don't want to put a kid in an embarassing position where he or she looks bad.

You will get a role that suits you, as compared to the rest of the auditioning students. If you're an underclassman, you might not get a role. If you have musical or acting ability of any kind, you probably will get a role of some sort.

Don't worry and make a big deal out of it. If you get a small role, remember there are no small roles! Just small actors who fail to see the opportunity in every role. And if you don't make the cut, try again next time, you just might.

I would say "The King And I" or "Oliver!", both of which require large childrens ensembles. Good luck!

Ideas for Middle School Musicals?

We Answered:

I think a great one would be "Into the Woods." It is an awesome play about fairy tales and such. My school is doing Peter Pan right now (High School) and it's fun but many of the parts have no lines. And even if some of your actors/actresses aren't great that doesn't mean you need to give all the leads to the one boy. When you give people without as much skills bigger roles, it gives them confidence and helps the others build new performing arts skills!
