Middle School Plays

Roberto Said:

middle school plays? urban fiction maybe?

We Answered:

www.theaterfolk.com

They are all clean, and all fun, well written plays. We just did a one act (45 min play) called Drop Dead, Juliet! in which Juliet refuses to die at the end and tries to rewrite the story. It was hilarious. Oh, and it was written for a large cast.

Dave Said:

How many hours a week do school plays in high school or middle schools usually rehearse?

We Answered:

It depends on the school. I direct plays at a middle school right now, and we are only allowed to have the auditorium after school on wednesdays and fridays, so we only rehearse for an hour and a half twice a week. The rehearsals last for about 4 months.

When I was in high school, rehearsals were five days a week, 3:00-6:00 for about a month and a half.

In college, rehearsals were Mon-Fri 6:00-10:00 for anywhere from a few weeks to two months.

Most community theatres do Mon-Thur 7:00-10:00 for about 6 weeks. Some do Saturday afternoon rehearsals too.

What are some good plays for middle school and high school students?

We Answered:

Here's a few that I've studied in theatre history classes (just for reading and writing papers on, that sort of thing):

Glass Menagerie
A Doll's House
Importance of Being Earnest
Tartuffe
A Raisin in the Sun
Oedipus the King
Uncle Tom's Cabin
Six Characters in Search of an Author
Trifles

Of, course, Shakespeare is a given. Here's some of my favorites:
Hamlet
Romeo and Juliet
Midsummer Night's Dream
Twelfth Night
Much Ado About Nothing
Macbeth
