Middle School Summer Enrichment Programs

Paul Said:

Want to go to the best college I can go to, so what should I do?

We Answered:

Take the toughest classes your high school offers, including those 5 AP courses, and do well in them.. Try to get a higher score on the ACT (although a 25 is good for an 8th grader). Look for opportunities in your own community to get involved, make a difference and improve things. Get involved as a political volunteer there -- and in Iowa you should have plenty of opportunity before the next presidential election. It'll give you contacts both in Iowa (in case you decide to become a politician there) and possibly contacts at the national level, who could be helpful when it's time later for internships, summer jobs, and even college recommendations. Being from Iowa should also help when it's time to apply to college. The Ivies get a lot of applicants from the East Coast, but not as many from the farm states. Good luck!

Gail Said:

Can anyone share ideas to help my daughter get through the summer without "summer learning loss?"?

We Answered:

Content and expectations vary greatly from one district to another. As an elementary school teacher, my advice would be for you to speak with her fourth grade teacher. She would be the best person to advise you. It would also give her a great first impression of you and your daughter. Best wishes and God Bless.

Can anyone share ideas to help my daughter get through the summer without "summer learning loss?"?

We Answered:

If she's already progressing like that during the school year, you don't need to worry about regression. Keep learning fun for her, and don't overwhelm her. She should read books of her choice at her approximate reading level throughout the summer, do a 3rd/4th grade math workbook or two to keep fresh or play math-focused computer games like Reader Rabbit, Monster Math, etc., maybe do some science, social studies, and/or creative expression exploration in summer programs at a nearby museum, art center, etc.

Your best bet to ensure her having an academic "edge" is to make sure she receives appropriate academic programming during the school year. Is she receiving gifted services?
