Middle School Writing

Allan Said:

what is the simplest way to teach descriptive writing to middle school students?

We Answered:

Use the five senses as headings, and brainstorm vocabulary relating to all five senses. Then use an object and start looking at their words for adjectives, similes, metaphors, etc. Practice this together a few times before setting them loose.

Articles/Writing for autistic children in middle school?

We Answered:

I have worked with many autistic children over the years at a wide range of ages and abilities.

I am not sure whether you want to have the children write the articles or read the articles.

If you want them to write the articles know that children with autism, regardless of academic achievement have difficulties with all forms of communication of ideas. They will typically write at a much lower level than they are able to read at. You will need very specific instructions and need to limit the length of the article. Also, it may help to give them topics that are research based rather than opinion based.

If you want children to read the articles, I again, would keep the articles research based. Many autistic children can decode at a higher level than they are able to comprehend as well. If there are comprehension questions at the end of the article keep them multiple choice or fill in the blank. For example, instead of asking "What is the name of the planet closest to the sun?" write your question like this: "The planet closest to the sun is named_____________." Open questions such as the first style can be confusing to children with autism.

help with middle school write ups and referral?

We Answered:

Permanent record is a lie. Write-ups, Zeros, Referals, all lies to keep you in line. Don't use this as an excuse to jerk around, but now you know something your peers do not.

I need a site that will help me with the N.C Middle School Writing Test for 7th grade?

We Answered:

They don't release these sorts of things on websites. Your teacher has copies of them. It shouldn't effect your way into high school. The only thing that really effects that is your 8th grade EOCs. Don't pass them and you won't see high school usually without going to summer school.
