Musicals For Middle School
Jeffrey Said:
Musicals for Middle school?We Answered:
If you are using kids as young as 3rd grade I'm not sure who would pick West Side Story? Great music, but the story is about illicit lovers, gang warfare and murder... just coming from the Mom in me that says that's pretty deep stuff for kids younger than 13. And cutting those things out cuts the story.I agree with the person who suggested Into the Woods Jr. It is just the first half of Into the Woods, and is ideal for your age grouping. I will tell you the music is challege to learn, but very do-able. It's also "cut" for you. So is Godspell Jr.
As for you cutting the script, (I assume you are getting the rights for these shows, as you should be to protect yourself from legal prosecution) If you haven't looked into the Jr shows they are already precut for middle school age kids in mind, and come with performance track cds and usually an hour performance time in mind. They are very much more affordable than the typical rental/royalties for a full show. I am including below a link for MTI info and another for Rogers and Hammersteins junior level shows. Best of luck to you.
