PLEASE HELP! Homeschool vs. Public school. Freaking out! Don't know what to do!?We Answered:
Sounds like the public schools there are bad, so I wouldn't advise going to them. But it doesn't sound like the homeschooling method you're using is really working for you. It doesn't have to be a choice between a bad public school and a bad homeschool--there are other options.I would suggest that you sit down and come up with an alternative method of homeschooling. You don't have to use the virtual school. Nor do you have to purchase expensive curriculum. Come up with a better plan for homeschooling.
You could plan curriculum for yourself. Look online at worldbook.com under parent resources for their "typical course of study" for your grade level to get some ideas of what is generally studied at that level. Then go to your public library and see what materials you can put together to cover those sorts of topics. Most public libraries have lots of great resources and the librarians can be very helpful if you explain to them what you are looking for.
Or call around to local homeschool support groups and see if anyone has some used curriculum that they are willing to get rid of cheaply. Or if there are any inexpensive co-op classes that might work for you. Or if someone has something else that they could recommend.
Or call a local public school and see if they have some old textbooks that they want to get rid of. Ours will sometimes give them away. You can choose to use them as your curriculum or as reference books and back-up materials as needed.
However you do it, come up with a plan for a better alternative to the virtual school. Then go to your mom and have a frank talk with her. It will take a bit of courage, but if you explain to her that you really aren't happy with the virtual school but don't want to go to the public school either, she'll probably understand your reasons for not speaking up in the first place. If you present her with a plan, she'll know that you're not just complaining in order to get out of work and will be less inclined to just throw you into public school.
Good luck.
