Don Said:

How can I make this essay more convincing and a stronger mechanically/ organization wise?

We Answered:

Let's talk about your thesis:

"Celebrities, highlighted by their athletic skills, musical talent, and acting abilities, are also negative influences to the youth of society, and should be held responsible for their actions."

This seems too long and disorganized. Instead:

"Celebrities need to understand that they are role models for young adults, and should take responsibility for when their actions are detrimental to society."

It's important to have a strong thesis because otherwise the reader will not be able to focus on your argument.

The rest of the essay needs to be organized in some way, such as by type of conduct (skimpy dress, criminal actions, inappropriate language...) or by person, (Johnny Knoxville, Miley Cyrus, P. Diddy...). The topic sentence of each paragraph should clearly state which of these you are focusing on.

It's clear that you have a lot of information here, so once you organize it you'll be in great shape

Nathan Said:

one time a teacher looked through my personal journal...?

We Answered:

Let me start by saying that I'm a teacher...

What your teacher did was wrong. If you had permission to do "whatever" after you were done testing as long as it didn't disturb anyone, then she should have left you alone. Writing in a journal wasn't disturbing the learning environment. If she had done that out of concern for you (if she'd noticed a change in your behavior and really was reaching out for your benefit) she wouldn't have dealt with you in the way she did. A teacher who truly cared (if she were unethical enough to have read over your shoulder) would have approached you with decency and kindness.

She should not have read the whole journal. If what she saw from reading over your shoulder (which, btw was kinda tacky.. unless of course you'd been showing evidence of being in trouble) was enough for concern, she should have turned things over to the counselor and let them take it from there.

She handled things very poorly. No wonder so many kids hate school.
If you feel confident enough, talk to the principal or the counselor about it. She shouldn't be allowed to act that way without real reason.

However, in answer to some of the others who answered this question... yup, a teacher can tell you what to do. It's kinda their job. Unless they're telling you to do something harmful to yourself or illegal, you're supposed to follow their guidance. Waiting in the hallway was not really a big deal.

And, no matter what young people want to think, teachers are legally mandated to watch their students for signs of physical abuse, drug abuse, suicidal tendencies, etc. We can be sued in some states for not taking action if we noticed things about students in which we could have prevented something more serious from happening.

lastly... on behalf of the decent teachers out there (of which I'd like to think I am one) please accept my apologies. Sometimes life just sucks.

Edit: Yes, the supreme court has ruled that schools can access your personal things, but the general rulings have always stated that can only take place if the item in question or the student in question is disrupting the learning environment or there is credible evidence that something illegal is going on. That's why cell phones are taken... disrupting learning environment. In this case, that doesn't really fit, and technically your teacher didn't have that reasoning. And yeah, we can go through students' lockers... with cause. For no real reason is where we get abuse of privilege.

In all seriousness, I've taken cell phones during class and handed them right back when class is over. However, ALL the kids know the agreement... if they're texting during class, they lose the phone until class is over. But I've never abused the privilege and looked through messages. That's just inappropriate if there is no true justification.
