Poems For Middle School Students

Hazel Said:

What's a good poem for memorization as a project for middle school students?

We Answered:

for ESL...

The New Colossus

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
Emma Lazarus, 1883

at least the last part:

"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Cathy Said:

I am looking for the words to poem, something similar to, "with this pencil"...Can anyone help???

We Answered:

I don't really know what you're asking, to be perfectly honest. I always found this website helpful though, when looking for inspiration for poetry: http://rhymezone.com/

It helps a lot when you're struggling to find words to flow, particularly if you want a rhyming poem. I hope you find it useful.

Laura Said:

The Iraq War: A controversial topic for a middle school student's poem?

We Answered:

I like it. Regardless of how you feel about the war or why the soldiers are in Iraq, these men and women left their families, their husbands, wives, mothers, fathers, neighbors, jobs, kids, pets, homes and lives to go live in dark, damp, sparse and uncomfortable conditions in a nasty scary place where they are being shot at and people are trying to blow them up because they agreed to join the armed services so that if our country decided it needed them to do something, they agreed to be there, even if that means putting their life on the line. These soliders didn't get to decide if they liked the war or the decision to go there. They just got told to get in there and do their job. It's not a job I would want and we should be grateful for those willing to do it, and to say thanks to them for doing it b/c they aren't being adequately paid for what they do.

Know of Any Good Poems?

We Answered:

If you want to do something different... Sort of philosophical, check out the Tao Te Ching.

You probably don't want to read all of them but, they are short chapters, and some of them are really cool.

Gotsa love speech and debate
